GTA General Contractors partnered with Mattel Canada to deliver the design-build renovation of its Canadian Headquarters in Mississauga, transforming an existing workplace into a contemporary, high-performing office that reflects the company’s globally recognized brand and collaborative culture.
Having remained largely unchanged for more than 25 years, the existing office no longer supported the operational, technological, or collaborative needs of a modern workplace, especially for an industry-leading brand such as MATTEL. Through a fully integrated design-build approach, the project reimagined the space to meet 2026 workplace standards, incorporating contemporary layouts, upgraded building systems, enhanced employee amenities, and modern architectural finishes.
Working alongside the client and project stakeholders from concept through completion, our integrated design-build team streamlined every phase of the project—from planning and value engineering through construction and final occupancy. The result is a modern headquarters that balances functionality, flexibility, and employee experience while supporting the evolving needs of Mattel Canada’s operations.
Integrated Design-Build Delivery
The Mattel Canada Headquarters renovation was delivered through a close collaboration between GTA General Contractors and SDI Design, with GTA General Contractors serving as the Design-Build Manager responsible for coordinating the project from pre-construction through completion.
Working together, the teams aligned the workplace design with the project’s construction requirements, budget, schedule, building systems, and operational objectives. Early coordination between SDI Design, GTA General Contractors, the client, consultants, trades, and suppliers allowed key decisions to be evaluated before construction, including layout feasibility, material selections, constructability, sequencing, and value-engineering opportunities.
As Design-Build Manager, GTA General Contractors provided a central point of project management, coordination and accountability throughout the project. Our team managed pre-construction planning, estimating, procurement, consultant and trade coordination, construction execution, quality control, scheduling, and project closeout.
This integrated approach supported efficient decision-making, reduced coordination risk, and helped preserve the design intent throughout construction. By combining SDI Design’s workplace design expertise with GTA General Contractors’ construction management and delivery capabilities, the project team successfully transformed the existing office into a functional, cohesive, and brand-driven headquarters environment.
Modern Workplace Transformation
The renovated headquarters was designed to encourage collaboration while supporting a variety of working styles throughout the office.
Open workstations promote communication between teams, while thoughtfully integrated meeting spaces, collaborative zones, and employee amenity areas create opportunities for both focused work and informal interaction. Warm architectural finishes, custom millwork, glass partitions, and natural materials establish a professional yet welcoming environment that reflects Mattel’s creative identity.
Large perimeter glazing introduces abundant natural light throughout the workspace, while strategically planned circulation paths improve connectivity between departments and create an intuitive employee experience.
The Result
The completed Mattel Canada Headquarters delivers more than a renovated office—it provides a workplace that strengthens collaboration, enhances employee experience, and supports the company’s continued growth.
Through integrated design-build delivery, GTA General Contractors successfully transformed the existing space into a modern corporate environment that combines thoughtful planning, efficient construction, and high-quality craftsmanship. The result is a flexible, future-ready workplace that reflects the innovation, creativity, and culture synonymous with the Mattel brand.
