Transforming a Former Ticket Office at Stouffville GO Station
GTA General Contractors transformed the former ticket office building at Stouffville GO Station into Pizza Carmelina, bringing a new restaurant concept to an established transit property. Delivered in close collaboration with the client and Metrolinx, the project adapted an existing building for a new purpose while navigating the demands of construction beside active rail infrastructure.
A New Purpose for an Existing Space
The fit-out converted the former ticket office into a welcoming restaurant with a distinctive interior. Terracotta-coloured ceilings, patterned floor tile, wood-front service counters and contrasting black finishes create a warm setting for the client’s Italian food concept.
Adapting the building required careful coordination between the restaurant’s operational needs, existing site conditions and the requirements of the transit property. GTA General Contractors worked closely with the project stakeholders to address these considerations throughout construction.
Construction Within an Active Rail Environment
The project’s location introduced responsibilities beyond those of a typical restaurant fit-out. Work frequently took place in close proximity to active rail lines, requiring strict health and safety measures at all times.
Careful planning, ongoing communication and disciplined site supervision were central to the construction approach. Activities had to be coordinated with an understanding of the surrounding rail environment and Metrolinx’s requirements, keeping safety at the forefront as the interior work progressed.
Close Collaboration with the Client and Metrolinx
Strong working relationships were essential to moving the project forward. GTA General Contractors maintained close coordination with the client and Metrolinx to work through site requirements, construction constraints and project details.
This collaborative approach helped the team respond to the challenges of converting a former transit building into a restaurant while maintaining a clear focus on workmanship, communication and safe execution.
The Result
The completed fit-out gave the former ticket office a new role as Pizza Carmelina—a distinctive dining destination within the Stouffville GO Station property.
The project demonstrates GTA General Contractors’ ability to deliver restaurant interiors in complex, operational settings, combining thoughtful construction coordination with the safety discipline required when working near active rail infrastructure.
